Style Salvage have just launched their new look blog; it's cleaner, easier to look at and overall we're loving it. But don't worry, its not style over substance...the editorial content that we know and love hasn't changed a bit...infact the more they post the better it gets! We sat one half of the blogging duo down (Steve) for a quick chat to find out his inspirations, what he's up to now and his predictions for the coming season.
Steve, welcome back to Topman! Let's start in the early days...how did you find yourself gaining interest in the fashion world?
I think a causal interest first arose after being constantly exposed to it from a young age, either being physically dragged to the shops by my shopaholic mum or from glossy mags lying around the house. As I grew up I developed my own personal interest where most of any money I had begged, borrowed or stole was spent clothes shopping or on magazines like GQ, The Face and Esquire. My consumerist tendencies exploded at Uni with the help of the student loan and meeting my blogging partner, EJ. She was a constant fixture on my almost weekly trips to the high street, picking out things from the racks and forcing me to try them on. After Uni I met Susie and she introduced me to a whole different side of fashion and I began to look at clothes and the industry a little differently...I was hooked!
And how did this turn into a love or writing? Was the passion for writing always there?
I've always enjoyed writing. I've tried my pen at most things including baaad poetry (I was young and foolish), music journalism and of course the obligatory barely started novel. Despite a love of writing I've never been able to stick to anything apart from the blog. It's been going for over two years now so I must be on to something.
Can you give any advice to aspiring bloggers / wannabe bloggers out there, how do you get people to read your blog?
I would say write about what really excites you and try to find a unique point of view because it differentiates your blog from the thousands of blogs that are out there already. When we had people reading and commenting it felt so good and it is quite easy to become addicted to blogging...but be warned, it can consume all your free time if you allow it to!
Your focus points a lot towards up and coming people in the world of fashion. How do you go about finding these people?
Somewhere along the way I've turned in to some kind of fashion geek. The scene at our flat most evenings involves Susie and me sitting on the couch on our laptops reading through blogs, looking at collections and then when our eyes get tired of looking at the screen we open a magazine. As the blog has taken off it has become easier to find things because in some cases the people find us
Any big plans for London Fashion Week?
I'll be saving myself for the 23rd September. I had so much fun covering the extended MAN day in February and I can't wait to see the SS10 collections. Last time round I was so busy that I didn't even get the chance to go to any parties so hopefully I'll learn from my mistakes and won't miss out this time round.
OK last one, hot tip for our readers - who is the next big designer in men's fashion?
We have so much menswear talent showing at LFW and the sad thing is there is even more who don't quite get the chance to show. After her debut catwalk show last time round, I'm looking forward to seeing Carolyn Massey step it up another notch and I'm really excited by Katie Eary's inclusion in the MAN lineup. I've kept a keen eye on the recent batch of graduates and predict that we'll see a great deal more from LCF Graduate Asger Juel Larsen.
