With the likes of the infamous Cavern Club, birthplace of the Beatles, in its illustrious history you could say Liverpool knows a thing or two about basement music venues. Fittingly then, the CTRL Live Liverpool venue was exactly that. Even better it was the opening night of Korova’s newly decorated basement space packed out with a sizeable crowd of Liverpool’s party people eager to check some of the hottest new bands this country has to offer.
The opening act were local boys Bicycle Thieves. They powered through half an hour of energetic rock and roll and did their hometown proud. Filling in the gaps between the bands were the Ladytron DJs, another set of Liverpool heroes who also happen to part-own the venue. About this time some exclusive Passion Pit designed t-shirts started making their way round the venue creating that warm fuzzy feeling that only free stuff can give.
Next up Airship floated in on a cloud of synthy goodness with their anthemic, dreamy pop. They had an unbeatable on stage energy and some pretty impressive synthesizers, a completely different proposition to Bicycle Thieves but equally great was the general consensus.
A quick interlude in the upstairs bar found Miles Kane from The Last Shadow Puppets on the decks and an equally merry bunch of revellers before Little Comets took the stage for the headline slot. A young band but with an extremely polished sound, tracks like the cheeky ‘Adultery’ really jumped out live with just the right amount of extra energy over the recorded versions. We confidently predict you’ll be hearing a lot more from these boys in 2010.
In short, Liverpool’s reputation as a city alive with music remains firmly intact. We came, we saw, we CTRLed. See more action from the gig at CTRL MySpace
