The day started badly for CTRL Live Cardiff as that pesky volcanic ash stuff filled the sky and, more importantly, left Chew Lips stranded on the other side of the world.
Chew Lips have rescheduled and are now performing on June 9th at the same venue, with new support. Original tickets are still valid, with a limited amount remaining for sale online, check cardiffartsinstitute.org for details.
In true British style the show had to go on, so the good people at the Cardiff Arts Institute made it a free show. With Ten Bears and Party Horse still in the house and local boy Dan Strange to man the decks we still had the making of a fine night.
Doors were at seven and while Dan warmed things up the assembled crowd got a chance to soak up the beautifully decorated venue, a cunning juxtaposition of Victorian architecture and bright bold décor with some spectacular graffiti and other neat little touches – wall of Marigold gloves anyone?
Nine o’clock rolled round and Ten Bears took to the stage, the Manchester five piece confidently breezed through their first couple of numbers including the standout ‘Red Shoes’, a mixture of classic AM rock, Gary Numan and Phoenix. Sound good? Well, it was and their music is so packed with hooks we were still trying to shake some of them out of our heads the next day.
Their half hour set was short but very sweet and the changeover between them and Party Horse must have set some kind of speed record. It probably helped that Party Horse are a two-piece, and arriving on stage to their own theme tune was a definite bonus. They also cut an impressive shape on stage in co-ordinated white velvet outfits including a jumpsuit for Ursula, who’s also a fashion designer.
The boy girl duo ripped through an electro tinged set mixing up drum machines with slightly glam guitars and disco punk vocal delivery. They had an infectious on stage energy that had the crowd happily bouncing along by the end of their short set.
In summary, Chew Lips were missed but we kept calm and carried on. Cardiff rocks, we had a Wales of time (Ouch!).
