Were you lucky enough to bag tickets for CTRL Live in York with the mighty Mystery Jets? It certainly was a night to remember so check out the video, including interviews with the bands and behind the scenes footage…
This Saturday, 27th November sees the return of the West End VIP Day and to coincide with this is the next instalment of Topman’s in store DJ programme ‘Saturday Matinee’ in its Oxford Circus flagship store. What better way to shop on a Saturday afternoon than with a soundtrack provided by some of the most up-and-coming and influential trendsetting bands, promoters and DJs on the London and national music scene.
This week sees three DJ sets as opposed to the usual two to mark VIP Day. First up we have south-east London’s finest ‘My Tiger My Timing’ (11am-1pm). Next we have north London’s ‘Man Like Me’ (2pm-4pm), then finishing up with a set by hotly tipped ‘Conan Mockasin’ (5pm-7pm).
Formed in January 2008, My Tiger My Timing are a six-piece indie band from New Cross, south-east London. Clash Magazine described their music as “alternative pop with a dark heart that’s bursting with desire”. Their debut single (This Is Not The Fire) was produced by Andy Spence of New Young Pony Club and their debut album is due for release Spring 2011.
Man Like Me deal in perky grooves fronted by wry, cynical raps about modern life, delivered in a cockney dialect whose painstaking, sometimes stilted, delivery implies that lyrical meaning is more highly valued than verbal style. Expect their DJ set to be full of energy and a sense of fun.

Topman CTRL made its debut in York last night, and what a debut it was! York may be one of the country’s most ancient cities but there was nothing old about the line up: Controllers the Mystery Jets had picked a line up of cutting edge sounds ranging from the best in new British songwriting to explosive dancefloor material.
The venue for all this was Fibbers, a classic old venue that’s recently been given a fresh coat of paint for 2010 bringing it bang up to date. With all the flashing CTRL boxes, lights and signs in place it looked incredible and ready for the action that was about to unfold. After a few last-minute M1 hold-ups and a soundcheck that ran right down to the wire doors were open. Just twenty minutes later Tribes were on stage, a seriously promising five piece with shades of 90s US grunge paired up with classic 70s British rock influences and other good stuff.
By the time they had finished the sold out show was almost at capacity, standing room only. Make that dancing room because as they played their last chords The Count and Sinden jumped straight on the decks and full speed into a high energy set that included their new material, classics like ‘Beeper’ and their own solo remixes of the likes of Amy Winehouse. The shiny new dancefloor was being given a serious workout, it looked more like Ibiza than winter in York.
Haunting strings and a spoken word intro heralded the arrival of the main event, time for Mystery Jets. We’ve had some cracking sets over the years on CTRL but this was amongst the very best. The boys exploded onto the stage in a riot of guitars, synths and vocal harmonies and didn’t let up for an hour. They played new ones like ‘Serotonin’ and a generous handful of classics.
The cherry on top was a performance of ‘After Dark’ with The Count and Sinden on stage, only the second time they’ve ever performed together. The crowd were the real stars thorughout though: crowdsurfing, pogoing, moshing you name it they were doing it.
It’s clear that after an amazing year and a month long tour the Mystery Jets are a band on the very best form and they brought it all to CTRL. Next stop Liverpool for Futureheads and Frankie festive fun.
Saturday, 20th November sees the next instalment of Topman’s in store DJ programme ‘Saturday Matinee’ in its Oxford Circus flagship store. What better way to shop on a Saturday afternoon than with a soundtrack provided by some of the most up-and-coming and influential trendsetting bands, promoters and DJs on the London and national music scene. This week sees all girl promoters Dance Magic Dance fill the 1pm-3pm slot followed by DJ and Kill Em All resident DJ Stopmakingme in the 4pm-6pm slot.
Dance Magic Dance is a night put on by three East London girls who love nothing more than to be swaying behind the decks whilst mixing up musical genres with little regard for taste or decency, and generally having lots of cider fuelled girly fun.
Stopmakingme’s love for Trash, Optimo, Soulwax and older references like The Paradise Garage all come through in his DJ sets where electro and techno sit alongside updated post-punk, huge disco, krautrock basslines, mutant new wave and perfect pop choruses.
Catch Dance Magic Dance and Stopmakingme as part of this week’s Saturday Matinee and stay up to date with the latest news and additions to the line-up at topman.com and topmanctrl.com.
