This Saturday, 27th November sees the return of the West End VIP Day and to coincide with this is the next instalment of Topman’s in store DJ programme ‘Saturday Matinee’ in its Oxford Circus flagship store. What better way to shop on a Saturday afternoon than with a soundtrack provided by some of the most up-and-coming and influential trendsetting bands, promoters and DJs on the London and national music scene.
This week sees three DJ sets as opposed to the usual two to mark VIP Day. First up we have south-east London’s finest ‘My Tiger My Timing’ (11am-1pm). Next we have north London’s ‘Man Like Me’ (2pm-4pm), then finishing up with a set by hotly tipped ‘Conan Mockasin’ (5pm-7pm).
Formed in January 2008, My Tiger My Timing are a six-piece indie band from New Cross, south-east London. Clash Magazine described their music as “alternative pop with a dark heart that’s bursting with desire”. Their debut single (This Is Not The Fire) was produced by Andy Spence of New Young Pony Club and their debut album is due for release Spring 2011.
Man Like Me deal in perky grooves fronted by wry, cynical raps about modern life, delivered in a cockney dialect whose painstaking, sometimes stilted, delivery implies that lyrical meaning is more highly valued than verbal style. Expect their DJ set to be full of energy and a sense of fun.
